In 2002 the number
of border clearances on Poland’s borders amounted
to 189.1 million, i.e. by 16.3 per cent less than a
year before. The number of foreigners arriving in Poland
as well as Polish citizens travelling abroad decreased.
In 2002 the most intensive border traffic was recorded
on the south border. The number of border clearances
on the border with Czech Republic amounted to 64.9
million persons (by 13.7 per cent less than a year
before) and on Poland-Slovakia border - to 15.1
million persons (by 17.6 per cent less). Last year
the number of border clearances on the west border
decreased by close to 22 per cent. In 2002 70.8 million
persons crossed this border. On the eastern border
the number of clearances decreased by 7.0 per cent
to 28.7 million persons. The most significant drop
was recorded on the border with Belarus (by 14.9 per
cent to 9.5 million persons). Fewer clearances were
also registered on the borders with Russia, Ukraine
and Latvia.
In airports the number of clearances amounted to
49 million persons (by 0.7 per cent more than a year
before), of which 82 per cent constituted clearances
in Okecie airport. In seaports the number of clearances
reached the level of 4.7 million, i.e. by 20.8 per
cent less than in 2001, of which almost ¾ constituted
clearances in Swinoujscie and Nowe Warpno.
In 2002 cross border traffic slowed down. Only 28.7
clearances were registered, i.e. by 29.4 per cent
less than a year before (a drop of 33.6 per cent in
2001).
In 2002 the number of foreigners arriving in Poland
amounted to 50.7 million - by 17.4 per cent
less than in 2001. Over 93 per cent of these foreigners
constituted citizens of the neighbouring countries.
The majority of tourists arriving in Poland constituted
Germans, though a drop of 23.7 per cent over 2001.
Less than a year before citizens from Czech Republic
and Slovakia as well as from Ukraine, Russia and Belarus
arrived in Poland.
In 2002 the number of clearances of Poles travelling
abroad decreased by 6.3 per cent to 45 million persons.
