Wages and salaries and social benefits in 2002
The average gross wages and salaries in enterprise sector (including obligatory social security premium) shaped at the level of PLN 2,277.43 and was higher by 3.4 per cent than a year before (a rise of 7.1 per cent in 2001). Despite low inflation rate average wages and salaries increased by 1.5 per cent in real terms (against 1.6 per cent in 2001).

Average gross wages and salaries growth was recorded in all sections of enterprise sector, but the diversification in growth dynamics turned out to be considerable.

The highest increase occurred in transport, storage and communication (significant rise in land and pipeline transport entities and in postal and telecommunication ones), mining and quarrying, electricity, gas and water supply. Wages and salaries picked up slower in real estates and business activities, hotels and restaurants as well as in construction. In manufacturing industry wages and salaries were by 2.7 per cent higher than a year before. In this section the most pronounced gains were recorded in the manufacture of radio, television and communication equipment and apparatus, tobacco products and chemical ones.

The highest average wages and salaries in enterprise sector, similarly to the previous years, were recorded in mining and quarrying and in electricity, gas and water supply. The lowest average wages and salaries occurred in several divisions of manufacturing industry (textile, leather and footwear industry, manufacture of wood and wood products) and in hotels and restaurants.

In 2002 average number of retirees and pensioners amounted to 9,236.7 thousand persons and was by 0.8 per cent lower than in 2001. Average monthly retirement pay and pension from non-agricultural social security system amounted to PLN 1,039.34 and was by 6.9 per cent higher than a year before (purchasing power increased by 4.6 per cent in comparison with previous year).

Average monthly retirement pay and pension of farmers shaped at the level of PLN 700.11 (nominal rise of 5.4 per cent over last year and of 3.1 per cent in real terms).

Average nominal wages and salaries in enterprise sector, at the presence of curbing inflation, are expected to increase by PLN 100.0 (real growth of about 1.3 per cent).
